Mayor Bronin Calls On U.S. Commerce Department To Reverse Decision

HARTFORD, CONN (August 5, 2020) – Today Mayor Luke Bronin called on U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to reverse the Census Bureau’s decision to end field data collection for the 2020 Census at the end of September rather than the previously announced date of October 31, 2020.  In May, Mayor Bronin spoke to Secretary Ross about the importance of a complete count in Hartford and across the country, and Secretary Ross committed to doing everything possible to ensure hard-to-count communities receive the resources they need to conduct a complete count.  Mayor Bronin’s letter is attached here(PDF, 114KB) .

“The census has a profound impact on both federal funding and political representation,” Mayor Bronin wrote in the letter.  “At this moment when our nation is recognizing the vast disparities in political power, an inaccurate and disproportionate undercounting of communities of color would result in a further widening of the gap in opportunity, resources, and representation.  I strongly urge and respectfully request that you direct the Census Bureau to continue field data collection through the previously announced date of October 31st, 2020 and reverse this misguided decision to end collection early.”
