HARTFORD, CONN (July 14, 2020) – Today Mayor Luke Bronin announced that this week the City of Hartford and twenty-five other cities, counties, and towns filed an amicus brief in Harvard and MIT’s lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which challenges the Department’s policy to deny visas to international students.  The amicus brief is available here and the underlying lawsuit is available here.

“The Trump administration is trying to use a global pandemic to punish and deter international students from coming to America,” said Mayor Bronin.  “We are proud to stand with cities across the country to push back on this latest attempt to demonize immigrants.  Generations of international students have enriched our city and our country, and we should be welcoming their talent and energy – not shutting the door on them.”

In addition to the City of Hartford, the amicus brief was filed by Los Angeles, C.A.; Boston, Mass.; Albany, N.Y.; the Albuquerque, N.M.; Alexandria, Va.; Austin, Texas; Berkeley, Calif.; Cambridge, Mass.; Cameron, Texas; Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; Cook County, Ill.; Dayton, Ohio; Durham, N.H.; Hartford, Conn.; Iowa City, Iowa; Las Cruces, N.M.; New York; Oakland, Calif.; Pittsburgh; Sacramento, Calif.; Saint Paul, Minn.; Seattle; Santa Clara, Calif.; Amherst, Mass.; and Somerville, Mass.
