HARTFORD TO SEND TEXTS TO REMIND RESIDENTS TO FILL OUT CENSUS

HARTFORD, CONN (September 28, 2020) – Today the City of Hartford announced it will be sending text messages to more than 50,000 residents to remind them to fill out the 2020 census.  Residents will receive a text this evening with a short message about the importance of the census and a link to fill out the census online at My2020Census.gov.  The Trump administration attempted to end the census count at the end of September, however a federal judge in California ruled late last week that census counting must continue through the end of October.

“We have been working with our local Census Bureau partners and a wide range of community groups to increase our census response rate, and these text messages are another way to reach residents and give them a direct link to fill out the census,” said Mayor Luke Bronin.  “We want residents to know that these texts are coming from the city and that the links are safe to click on.”

The messages will be in English or Spanish, and the text reads as follows: in English: “Hartford residents will lose political power and millions of dollars if we don’t fill out the census. It is quick and safe and really important.” In Spanish: “Los residentes de Hartford perderán poder político y millones de dólares si no completamos el censo. Es rápido, seguro y realmente importante.”
