NEW WASTE DISPOSAL BID TO MURPHY ROAD RECYCLING, SAVING CITY $300K+

HARTFORD, CONN (December 14, 2021) – Today, the City of Hartford has announced that it has selected Murphy Road Recycling, LLC’s bid to assist in the City’s waste disposal efforts. Once the agreement is finalized, Murphy Road would handle the transfer and disposal of Hartford’s municipal solid waste. Its Hartford facility would serve as a transfer station, collecting waste from Hartford’s sanitation truck fleet before shipping it to disposal facilities. This new agreement would replace the partnership with the MIRA plant in South Meadows, which has recently announced that it will be discontinuing its trash incineration operations at the end of June 2022.
City officials expect that the new deal would save the City approximately $300,000 to $500,000 annually, and it would also be cost efficient for private haulers and trash collectors serving the City's businesses and larger multifamily residential buildings and developments. Murphy Road’s location in Hartford would also allow the City’s waste collection fleet to efficiently and cost-effectively transfer trash for ultimate disposal. Processing of Hartford’s recycling would remain free of charge, with this function being handled at Murphy Road’s facility in Berlin.
"After careful consideration of the bids we received, we are proud to be awarding Murphy Road with a bid to join our waste disposal efforts," said Michael Looney, Director of Public Works for the City of Hartford. "We have already worked with Murphy Road for the City’s recycling needs, and we have talked to other municipalities that are very satisfied with the level of service provided by Murphy Road."
“We are proud of this agreement, which will mean a huge savings for taxpayers of Hartford, as well as cleaner air and less emissions in our South Meadows neighborhood,” said Councilman James Sanchez, Co-Chair of the Quality of Life and Public Safety Committee. “Murphy Road will be a great partner for the City, and they are committed to transparency, communication, and delivering quality services to the residents of Hartford. I am confident that they will do a great job, and City Council looks forward to working with them in the years to come.”
When finalized, the contract between the City and Murphy Road will span five years. Murphy Road’s bid was chosen after the City sent out an RFP requesting bids for its waste disposal needs.
