The City, working with Riverfront Recapture Inc., (RRI) successfully applied for federal Transportation Alternative funds, which are administered by the CT Department of Transportation. This grant will be used to design and construct an extension of the Connecticut Riverwalk. The Riverwalk will follow a path north from the Jaycees Boathouse and terminating beyond Meadow Brook, where Riverfront Recapture Inc. owns ground. Riverfront Recapture will continue the path across its property, linking to a path that is already in place in Windsor, creating a safe, convenient bicycle link from downtown Hartford to Windsor and South Windsor.
The new Riverwalk will be located between the earthen levee that protects Hartford from flooding and the Connecticut River. The project has been underway since January 2019. An outreach meeting was held in June 2019 to present the preliminary design to the public. The project is now in final design. Future construction is expected to be completed in 2023.
