HARTFORD, CONN (May 21, 2021) – Mayor Luke Bronin issued the statement below after Alden Global Capital successfully acquired Tribune Publishing, a newspaper chain that includes the Hartford Courant.
“A strong Hartford Courant is a vital to our community and vital to a healthy, strong democracy here in Connecticut,” said Mayor Bronin. “I am deeply concerned by this takeover because this hedge fund’s record is clear, and it is not good. At a time when democracy is under attack in many ways, at many levels, losing control of the nation’s longest continuously published paper to a hedge fund that slashes newsrooms and doesn’t seem to care at all about quality journalism is very concerning and very, very disappointing.”
