HARTFORD TO HOST YOUTH SUMMER ACTIVITIES FAIR SATURDAY, APRIL 22ND

Published on April 21, 2023

HARTFORD, CONN (April 21, 2023) – Today, the City of Hartford announced that the Department of Families, Children, Youth and Recreation (DFCYR) and the North Hartford Promise Zone will be hosting a youth summer activities fair this Saturday, April 22nd.  The first event of its kind hosted by the City, the fair aims to help parents and guardians register their children for summer sports, camps, internships, and programs before they reach capacity.  The youth summer activities fair is open to all residents and will be held from 9:30 AM until 12 PM at Parker Memorial Community Center, located at 2621 Main Street.  The fair is free to the public and will feature around two dozen summer program providers.

“We’ve got some great summer opportunities for summer enrichment and summer fun, and we want as many kids as possible to participate,” said Mayor Bronin.  “When school’s out for summer break, it’s so important to offer kids a chance to keep learning, keep building friendships, keep connecting to mentors, and keep having fun, whether it’s outside in our parks or inside in our rec centers, and our team at the Department of Families, Children, Youth and Recreation has put together a great range of options.  I encourage everyone to come learn about our summer programs and sign up.”

“At our Ascend Pipeline community meetings in North Hartford, we heard time and time again that residents don’t receive information about summer programs for their kids until it is too late,” said Courtenay Jackson, North Hartford Promise Zone Director.  “With this fair, we’re providing North Hartford residents with access to important summer programs and services within walking distance, while highlighting some of the organizations that are doing fantastic work in our community.”

“We are excited to hold the first-ever Youth Summer Activities Fair, as the ultimate in-person family guide to youth summer programs in Hartford,” said Kristina Baldwin, Director of the Department of Families, Children, Youth and Recreation.  “Quality summer programs can help children develop positive social interactions, learn new skills, gain access to exciting opportunities, and can help in preventing summer learning loss. We are thrilled to be able to offer this resource to our families to help support them in finding the best summer programs to fit their needs.”

"We need more events like this Summer Activities Fair for children and families to have convenient access to opportunities and resources that can help them, with the ability connect in-person and get questions answered in real time,” said Kyrinda Richardson, Youth Development Manager of the Urban League of Greater Hartford.  “It is so important for our residents to be exposed to free local programs, with fun summer adventures the city has to offer."
