Mayor Bronin Statement On Biden Administration Gun Violence Initiative

HARTFORD, CONN (June 24, 2021) – Today Mayor Luke Bronin issued the statement below in response to the Biden-Harris administration’s strategy to prevent and respond to gun crime, which was released yesterday.

“Yesterday I spoke to the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to express our strong support for the Biden-Harris administration’s broad range of initiatives to stem the flow of guns into communities across the country, support investment in community violence interruption, expand services for young people, and more,” said Mayor Luke Bronin.  “The administration’s focus on stopping illegal firearms trafficking is urgently needed in our community and across the country.  Our police have made well over 100 gun arrests this year, but the steady flow of firearms into communities like ours makes it incredibly difficult for our officers to stem the tide.  President Biden is also right to focus on community partnerships and violence intervention.  Soon after the American Rescue Plan passed we identified community safety and youth support as key areas of investment, and we appreciate yesterday’s announcement underscoring that our plans fit well within the scope of ARP funding.  In partnership with the City Council, we allocated $11.25 million for violence intervention and reduction and other community safety initiatives and $13.9 for youth engagement and employment.  We are working quickly to put the internal and external processes in place to begin getting these resources into our community, and we’re prioritizing community safety and youth support among the categories of investments we identified.”
