HARTFORD, CONN (April 20, 2020) – Beginning this Wednesday, the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, the City of Hartford’s Office of Sustainability will launch Earth Day 50 Hartford, a week-long series of environmental webinars in partnership with more than a dozen local community organizations.  Residents and organizations from across Hartford will come together for more than twenty free webinars with environmental leaders, researchers, and organizers focusing on local and global environmental issues, including air quality, sustainable food systems, clean energy, and forest conversation.  The full list of events is available here

“Over the last four years, we have made building a cleaner, greener community a priority and worked to make Hartford a leader when it comes to climate stewardship and responsibility,” said Mayor Luke Bronin.  “This week, our sustainability office has organized an incredible series of programs to celebrate, educate, inform and inspire our community during Earth Week.  The coronavirus pandemic should reinforce the critical importance of listening to the experts, respecting the data, and investing in solutions and resiliency up-front -- and that applies just as much to the climate crisis as it does to the coronavirus.  I want to thank Shubhada Kambli and Grace Yi in our Office of Sustainability as well as our AmeriCorps Vista Kathryn Fiducia, Jeff Devereux at Breakfast Lunch and Dinner, and Rose Rodriguez at Trinity College for putting together such a rich program for our Virtual Earth Week.”

“The coronavirus pandemic highlights the need for thoughtful public policy that protects residents now and well in the future,” said Shubhada Kambli, Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Hartford.  “Clean air, clean water, safe and accessible food choices, energy efficient homes, and greener jobs matter more now than ever before, and we are proud to highlight the work being done in Hartford and Connecticut to build a greener future.  We would like to thank all of the organizations and speakers for their time and effort to put together Earth Day 50 Hartford.”

Participating organizations include: Breakfast Lunch and Dinner, Blue Earth Compost, BiCi Co, City of Hartford Energy Improvement District Board, CT Green Bank, Ebony Horsewomen, Greater Hartford Arts Council, Hartford Public Library, Keney Park Sustainability Project, Keney Park Sustainability Project, Immanuel Church, Green Eco Warriors, KNOX, Hartford Food System and Hartford Food Policy Commission, PosiGen Solar, Trinity College, and Toivo.
