Hartford Joins Nationwide, Bipartisan Initiative To Welcome Afghans

HARTFORD, CONN (September 14, 2021) – Today Mayor Luke Bronin announced that the City of Hartford has joined Welcome.US, a new, bipartisan national effort to empower Americans to welcome and support our new Afghan neighbors. In partnership with local and national resettlement agencies, Afghan-American organizations and leaders, refugees, community sponsorship groups, nonprofits, businesses, faith-based organizations, veterans, universities, and many others, Welcome.US will create a single point of entry for Americans who want to get involved and support the people starting new lives in the United States. The organization’s website will host a set of priority actions for everyday Americans to take, including financial contributions, giving in-kind donations, providing short-term housing for families seeking safety, and sponsoring a family as they get settled in their communities.

“Our armed forces did heroic work rescuing tens of thousands of our Afghan allies, and as a country our mission now turns to welcoming them and helping them begin new lives — for their benefit, and for ours,” said Mayor Luke Bronin.  “Hartford has a long and proud history of welcoming refugees, but I’m proud to join Democrats and Republicans from across the country to say that America is ready and eager to welcome Afghan allies who worked side by side with our troops and diplomats.  These Afghans risked their lives to work on behalf of our country, and in some cases their work saved the lives of Americans in uniform.  Hartford, Connecticut, and communities across America will be stronger and more prosperous when we welcome them as our own.”

Earlier this month, Mayor Bronin helped lead a unanimous resolution from the U.S. Conference of Mayors affirming the commitment of cities across the country to welcome Afghan allies and their families.
