The office of Equity and Opportunity is responsible for fostering equality and understanding by supporting the efforts of the city's policy, leadership in seeking social and economic justice for all Hartford residents.

Karen T. Taylor

Karen “Kae” Taylor has over a decade of experience shaping inclusive environments in higher education, corporate, and government sectors. She is leading the inaugural Office of Equity and Opportunity to create more equitable processes and partnerships that benefit City colleagues and communities. She is a long time Hartford resident and earned her B.A from Trinity College.

Commissions

Civilian Police Review Board

The Civilian Police Review Board hears public complaints against Hartford police officers in order to maintain an independent oversight of the Police Department. The Inspector General conducts and oversees investigations into the allegations of misconduct by the police and reports findings to the CPRB for evaluation. The CPRB holds public meetings to hear the findings and vote on the results.

Human Relations Commission

Human Relations Commission is a commission foster mutual understanding and respect and encourage equal treatment and cooperation among all races, ethnic groups and sexual preferences.

Permanent Commission of Status of Hartford Women

Permanent Commission of Status of Hartford Women is a commission eliminate gender-based discrimination and approve status of women in hartford.

Commission on Disability Issues

Commission on Disability Issues is a commission that recommends ways of correcting efficiencies that prevent persons with disabilities from functioning as full citizens.

LGBTQ+ Commission

LGBTQ+ Commission assists in the elimination of bigotry, discrimination and prejudice against lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender persons in the city.

Commission of Veterans Affairs

Commission of Veterans Affairs serve as an advisory board to Mayor and City Council concerning the well being of military veterans in the Hartford area.

Inspector General

Office of the Inspector General

The Inspector General (IG) is the city official overseeing investigations into allegations of police misconduct. The Inspector General investigates misconduct allegations that stem from citizen complaints, as well as investigations that the CPRB has initiated on its own. On behalf of the CPRB, the IG may make policy recommendations to the Mayor's Office and Court of Common Council.
